But just because a church professes certain beliefs doesn't in itself give the church the right to practice those beliefs, polygamy being an example. Homosexuality is not a church, although I can see that happening in my crystal ball. I am surprised, actually, that the gay movement has not pronounced itself a church already. But protecting religious rights is not the same as protecting immorality. The "Church", and the Mormon church is not the only church to take a stand, will make its stand within its right to do so and I will stand with it. I am not so sure that the leadership is surprised by the 'blowback' as stated. I am not surprised. I fought for Prop 8 and against SSM for fear of the consequences. Now we will have to live with those consequences. Legalizing SSM legitimizes it, condones it, and ultimately endorses it. "Vice is a monster of so frightful mien, As to be hated needs but to be seen. Yet seen too oft, familiar with her face, We first endure, then pity, then embrace." (Alexander Pope) We have reached the stage where society, or certain elements of it, are embracing this monstrous vice. Prop 8 was the most un-Christian thing our church ever did to anyone that wasn't a member.Stanczykhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15519641141023483236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7809118869403074500.post-54555095028924672632011-02-24T06:45:46.447-08:002011-02-24T06:45:46.447-08:00Sometimes it seems like a lot of people want unlim...Sometimes it seems like a lot of people want unlimited freedom for themselves and limits for everyone else. To put it another way, Mercy for me, justice for you.

I guess Oaks is angry that the church is facing blowback for its efforts in the Prop. 8 fiasco. He wants his freedom of speech/religion but wants to prevent anyone from saying anything back.

It kind of reminds me of what happened with the Dixie Chicks. They spoke out forcefully about something they believed in and were inexplicably stunned when the country music world pushed back. I don't know why they didn't understand that would happen, especially given the time and demographic of that audience, but they had the same kind of reaction.

In the same way, the church leadership was totally caught by surprise by the reaction to this issue. It's not the 1970s anymore. They can't control all the information. People are going to speak out about things they don't like. Further, the younger members of the church don't approach the church the same way their parents did. It's the church that needs to change.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
